Characteristics of the Institute
The Detention Institute is a unique facility of its kind, the first one in Slovakia. It is designed for 75 patients. These are persons who have been ordered by the court to be placed in a detention centre under Section 81 of the Criminal Code. The security regime is set up to ensure maximum safety of citizens, staff and the patients themselves. The facility has medical staff (doctors, nurses, orderlies, assistants), auxiliary staff (THP workers, cleaners) and staff of the Prison and Justice Guard Corps.
The Detention Institute is a state budget organisation established by the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic. Its purpose is to carry out detention, protection of society and therapeutic, educational action on a person in detention by means provided for in the Act on Detention No. 231/2019 Coll.
A new type of health care facility that provides inpatient health care in continuous operation. It protects society and seeks to potentially improve the health condition of the person in detention. It is a continuous treatment under the professional supervision of health professionals with acquired specialization – continuous administration of medication and prompt management of situations requiring medical intervention, timely reflection and response to acute deterioration of health status and elimination of problems related to the availability of necessary medications.
A detention centre shall be headed by a director of the detention centre (hereinafter referred to as „the director“), who shall be the statutory authority of the detention centre. The Director shall be appointed and dismissed by the founder. The detention centre shall be divided into treatment units, which shall be a detention unit, a detention and rehabilitation unit and a rehabilitation and detention unit. The treatment unit is intended for persons in detention, as a rule with the same special treatment regime.
The treatment unit shall consist of treatment rooms used to accommodate persons in detention, common areas, therapy rooms and rooms for professional staff and members of the staff.
The treatment room shall be equipped with hygiene and sanitary facilities providing a sufficient degree of privacy and shall, as a rule, be fitted with a security door. The accommodation area for a person in detention shall be at least 4 m2.
